Professor Andrew
Nunn trained as a statistician and joined the MRC Tuberculosis
& Chest Diseases Unit in the late 1960s.
In the years that followed he was closely
involved in all the MRC trials of short-course chemotherapy in East
Africa, Hong Kong and Singapore. After the closure of the TB
Unit he moved into HIV research and joined the MRC Uganda AIDS
Programme in Entebbe. He worked there for six years as senior
statistician and then as Deputy Head of the Programme.
On returning to London he rejoined the MRC HIV
Clinical Trials Centre and then became head of the Division Without
Portfolio (now the Other Diseases Group) of the newly formed MRC
Clinical Trials Unit.
His main research interest is in tuberculosis
although he has also been actively involved in research into
vaginal microbicides for the prevention of HIV infection, and
developing clinical
trials in neglected disease areas such as
Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disorders, Blood
Transfusion, Dermatology,
and Multiple Sclerosis.
