Cochrane Collaboration
Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis Methods Group

History

In 1994 when IPD reviews were relatively rare and there was little published guidance on how they should be done, a workshop (supported by the UK Cochrane Centre) was convened. This was attended by representatives of most of the groups, who had experience of planning or conducting IPD reviews. The aims were to discuss practical aspects of these projects and to identify areas of agreement and disagreement on the methodology. This meeting subsequently led to the formation, and registration of the Methods Group in 1995 and a full report was published that year (Stewart and Clarke 1995).

The use of IPD has increased since then and extended into many areas of health care, each with its own practical and methodological challenges. To explore these issues two further advanced methodological workshops were held. The first took place in Cambridge (1999) and addressed two specific topics: combining IPD and aggregate data in meta-analyses of time-to-event outcomes and the use of competing risk analyses in the meta-analysis setting. The second, at the 8th Cochrane Colloquium in South Africa (2000), aimed to explore the different reasons people had for needing to use IPD and to share problems and experiences.Since its formation, the Group has regularly held workshops at the annual UK Cochrane Contributors Meetings and Cochrane Colloquia, which offer further guidance on various aspects of IPD reviews.

Activities

The IPD Meta-analysis Methods Group bases its activities around the six core functions outlined by The Cochrane Collaboration.

These are:

  • Providing policy advice via the convenors
  • Providing training and support through workshops at Colloquia and Contributors' Meetings
  • Conducting methodological research e.g. bias, heterogeneity and how results from IPD compare with results from other types of systematic review
  • Helping to monitor the quality of systematic reviews.
  • Serving as a forum for discussion.
  • Ensuring that the Group functions interactively with the Cochrane Collaboration.
