Recruitment to the ARREST trial started on Monday 10th December, with the first patient entering the trial. Recruitment will continue through 2013 and 2014, and researchers plan to recruit 940 patients from hospitals across the UK. The ARREST trial is the largest ever trial worldwide exploring the best way to treat Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection. It is investigating whether adding an extra drug, rifampicin, on top of standard antibiotic treatment improves survival and reduces the chance of the infection re-occurring. Staphylococcus aureus is a common infection, with around 12,000 people in the UK infected each year.
